Bin-It is a cocoa application that runs in the background (put it into your startup items) and acts like the original Mac OS 9 trash can on your desktop.
Bin-It is a tool that tries to imitate the behavior of the original wastebasket by darkening when you drag files over it. It also shows as "full" when files are in it.
I guess that like a lot of people, I miss the old / classic wastebasket / trash desktop icon (pre-OSX). Other applications I've tried which provide a desktop icon have been a little clunky.
It's hidden from the dock and menu bar, but provides (via a right-click or control-click) a menu offering the 'empty trash' option as well as customization (size and style).
