Tiny Core Linux piCore Description

Tiny Core Linux piCore is an open source Linux distribution based on the main Tiny Core Linux edition and specifically engineered to support the Raspberry Pi hardware platform. The Tiny Core Linux distribution is famous for providing users with a minimalist (only 14 MB in size) and totally free Linux operating system that’s highly modular through extensions build by a vast community. It is based on the Tiny X, Busybox and Fltk open source technologies. It uses the lightweight JWM (Joe's Window Manager) desktop environment and runs entirely in RAM. It starts really quick when using a recent Linux kernel, vmlinuz 3.0 and a 5MB core.gz base.Among the features integrated by the Tiny Core developer in this Raspberry Pi edition, we can mention Linux kernel 3.12 with sound DAC support, BusyBox, X.Org 7.7, eglibc 2.18, zram (compressed RAM), zswap (compressed swap in RAM), as wel as the Linaro 4.8-2013.11 (GCC 4.8.3) toolchain. It is ideal as an appliance or to be deployed on custom systems that use the Raspberry Pi architecture. Just like the original Tiny Core Linux edition, it runs entirely in RAM, can be deployed on a SD card, and doesn’t require installation. In addition, the distribution lets users to control which applications to install using the project's online repository, as well as to add support for various hardware platforms, such as a desktop, a server, a nettop, or an appliance. We should also mention that the Tiny Core project provides a more complex edition of this minimalistic distribution, the Tiny CorePlus, which includes several extensions build by the community, provides a simple way to get started using the Core philosophy, and enables users to easily install a supported desktop environment.Tiny Core Linux’s main goal is to provide users with a basic toolkit that allows them to create their own customized operating system. Ano now that the Raspberry Pi platform is supported, the trilogy is finally complete.
