Xubuntu is an open source and full-featured Live Linux distribution based on Ubuntu Linux and built around the lightweight and practical Xfce desktop environment. It provides users with a fast, stable and reliable computing environment for common day-to-day tasks.With Xubuntu you can get started right away, as the Live DVD is designed in such a way that it installs the operating system very quickly, straight from the boot menu of the Live DVD, and doesn’t force users to install additional software.It was initially created as a community-derived project that aimed to provide users with a lightweight Ubuntu desktop experience on older hardware and low-end computers. In time it became an official Ubuntu flavor.Like many other Ubuntu-derived operating systems, Xubuntu is distributed as Live DVD ISO images, supporting both 32-bit and 64-bit architectures. The boot menu will allow users to try the entire system without installing it, boot the operating system that is already installed or test the RAM (system memory) for errors.The Xfce desktop environment offered in Xubuntu is comprised of a taskbar on the upper part of the screen and a hidden dock at the bottom. From the taskbar you will be able to access the main menu, switch between two virtual desktops (more can be added), access system functions (shutdown, restart, logout, etc.) and system tray programs.Default applications include the Thunar file manager, Mozilla Firefox web browser, Mozilla Thunderbird email client, Pidgin instant messenger, Transmission torrent downloader, XChat IRC client, GIMP image editor, gThumb image viewer and organizer, GMusicBrowser audio player, Parole video player, AbiWord word processing app, and Gnumeric spreadsheet software.Users can purchase, install, update or remove applications through the Ubuntu Software Center application that can be opened directly from the main menu.
