Kubuntu is an open source Linux distribution based on the world's most popular free operating system, Ubuntu Linux, and built around the KDE Plasma Workspaces and Applications platform.It combines the powerful and eye-candy KDE desktop environment with a stable and trusted Ubuntu base. There are two Live DVD ISO images available for this distro, one for the 64-bit architecture and another one for the 32-bit one.Kubuntu is the first ever Ubuntu-derived distribution. This is an important achievement for this project, because its now very mature, and it’s backed by a vast community of talented people.The distribution is always based on the latest Ubuntu release, as well as on the latest KDE technologies. The Live DVD images provide the same functionality that’s available on other official Ubuntu flavors.For example, you can use the Live DVD to add several predefined boot options that will make some hardware components to work properly, test the RAM (system memory) of the respective computer, as well as to choose a different language for the live environment and boot the operating system that is already installed.There’s no way to install Kubuntu from the boot menu. But this is a well known problem with other Ubuntu-derived operating systems, including Ubuntu itself, because they let users to choose between the live mode or installation mode after booting the disc.The KDE desktop experience provided by Kubuntu is a pure one, comprised of a taskbar at the bottom of the screen and a folder widget on the desktop that mirrors the contents of the Desktop Folder.Default applications include the Mozilla Firefox web browser, Amarok audio player, KTorrent torrent downloader, Akregator feed reader, Quassel IRC client, KMail email client, Okular document viewer, Dolphin file manager, Gwenview image viewer, K3b CD/DVD burning tool, Dragon Player video player, and the LibreOffice office suite.In addition, the KSnapshot screenshot tool, Skanlite image scanning app, Krita digital painting tool, Kamoso picture retriever, KMix sound mixer, KAddressBook contact manager, and Kexi database creator are also included in Kubuntu Linux.We recommend users to deploy Kubuntu for high-end computers, because KDE requires a lot of computing resources.
